The Island covers approx one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan. These areas are rich in folk songs, which are different from Japan however the cultures are almost the same. While singing the folk songs, people use a musical instrument called Jabisen/sanshin ( sanxian in Chinese) which has a three-stringed lute with a long stick and a small body covered with snake skin.

Hatoma-bushi is a popular folk song throughout Okinawa which is originated from a small island called Hatoma, The song used to be sung when the people of the island joyously watched the boats carrying the rice and millet they paid as tax.
